What is Mole Removal Surgery?

The average person can have between 10 and 40 moles on their body and so it’s not uncommon for 1 or 2 to cause concern.

We offer mole removal for both cosmetic and medical reasons. We offer a range of procedures that are minimally invasive and allow for quick healing.

The Benefits of Mole Removal

If you are thinking of having a mole removed, it is worth considering the benefits of doing so.

  • Improve appearance of skin
  • Stop the spread of potentially cancerous and pre-cancerous cells
  • Reduce skin irritations
  • Moles can get in the way of shaving, removing them eliminates this problem

Treatment Methods

Below are the different mole removal treatment options we can perform here at Pinewood Clinc. You Doctor will consult with you on the best removal method for your skin.

Curettage: This involves using a small spoon-shaped instrument (curette) to scrape the mole off the skin. It may be done under local anesthesia, which numbs the area around the mole. There is usually some bleeding and a small risk of scarring with this method.

Excision: This involves cutting out the mole and surrounding tissue with a scalpel. It is often done under local anesthesia but may require sedation if the mole is large or in an difficult-to-reach location. Stitches are required to close the wound, and there is a slightly higher risk of scarring with this method compared to curettage.

CO2 Laser Removal: This method uses a laser to destroy the mole tissue. It is often done under local anesthesia and has a lower risk of scarring compared to excision.

Other Skin Removal Treatments

Milia

Milia are small cysts that form when dead skin cells get trapped under your skin. They sometimes happen spontaneously and sometimes happen in response to skin damage. Some milia will clear up on their own, but when they don’t we can help.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are small growths that hang off your skin. Soft, and skin-coloured growths on your skin, they can vary in colour and size – from a few millimetres up to 5cm wide. They’re common and harmless, but can be removed if they’re bothering you.

Can I get Mole Removal on the NHS?

The NHS will only perform mole removal surgery if the mole in question is cancerous or life-threatening. This means that the majority of mole removal is done through private treatment.

What is a Cancerous Mole?

If you notice any changes in your moles, it is important to have them checked by a dermatologist or doctor. This is because moles can be an early sign of skin cancer, including melanomas, basal cell carcinomas, and squamous cell carcinomas.

Additionally, moles can also be precancerous lesions – changes that are not cancer but could become cancer over time.
